脳みそという言葉がある。これは武士が世に出てから、戦の際には敵の大将などの首を挙げて実検するという習わしがあった。首というのは腐ってしまうので、塩漬けにしたりして実検するまでに腐らないように保存する。そこでいちばん腐りやすい脳を取り除いてそこに味噌を詰めて、味噌漬けにするのがメジャーであったという。脳の中身を脳みそと呼ぶのはこの名残りである。
